Information on AC's Community Integration Work

In the area of community integration, the majority of the work of Advocacy Center focuses on systemic issues.  These issues include:

  • Insure children with mental illness currently residing in, or at risk of, out of home placements, have the opportunity to live in more integrated settings with appropriate community supports
  • Insure that adults with mental illness who are homeless, in institutions, or in the community, receive appropriate and adequate mental health treatment in the least restrictive environment
  • Insure that the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) implements the voucher set-aside program for people with disabilities
  • Advocate for a set-aside of CBDG funds for accessibility modifications to Section 8 supported apartments through meetings and negotiations with HANO and the City of New Orleans

Judge Rules: Pitts v. DHH Can Proceed

On May 18, 2011, AC received a positive decision in Pitts v. Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH), which seeks to prevent hundreds of low-income people with severe disabilities from losing services and being institutionalized in nursing facilities. The judge ruled that the suit can proceed to trial, dismissing DHH’s motion for summary judgment.
