Pursuing Higher Ed with a Disability

The AC’s Client Assistance Program represented an individual, MM, who is diagnosed with a muscular skeletal disorder.

MM was working toward a college degree and contacted AC for assistance when Louisiana Rehabilitation Services (LRS) denied her support at college for the upcoming school semester because, due to her disability, she was unable to maintain a full-time course load.

MM had previously requested that LRS allow her to take courses on a part-time schedule as an accommodation and LRS refused to support anything but full-time coursework.

AC successfully represented the client in a fair hearing, allowing our client to continue college on a part-time basis.

As a result of this case LRS corrected and clarified its policy on providing reasonable accommodations for clients pursuing higher education.
